On January 1, 2006, the Durham Region Transit Commission was established. Their goal was to provide an affordable, single fare system. With each community having it's own transit system, they created a structure linking people and jobs.

Durham Region Bus Transit has developed a service area that is divided into West, East, Centre and North. A door to door service is available for disabled passengers by specialized services.

Durham Region has an excellent recycle program. In addition to a green bin, blue box and yard waste pickup schedule, they maintain a waste disposal facility.

The drop-off faciality is located at 1640 Ritson Road North in Oshawa. Telephone 905.433.2050. Hours of operation are Tuesday to Saturday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The facility accepts the following materials for disposal, recycling, composting or reuse:

• Residual waste
• Furniture and appliances
• Tires
• Scrap metal
• Househole hazardous wastes (including car & household batteries)
• Drywall
• Needles/syringes
• Propane tanks
• Blue box materials
• Yard waste
• Paint
• Electronics

Disposal fees are $120 per tonne with a minimum of $5 charge per visit. Household hazardous wastes delivered separately are accepted free of charge.
